Stadium roof spring cleaning
The imposing yet seemingly delicate roof at the Olympiastadion Berlin “hovers” 40 meters above the playing field. Designed by the architectural office of von Gerkan, Marg and Partner from Hamburg, the roof is one of the distinctive recognition features of the Olympiastadion Berlin – currently it is being cleaned.
All in all, more than 55.000 m² roof space need to be cleaned. This is done in between the two roof membranes that are constructed of coated fiber glass. The group cleaning the roof is solely using water for its operation. The membranes are constructed so no chemicals are needed for cleaning, no matter how dirty it may be.
The 3.500 tons heavy and 68 m wide roof is supported by 20 tree-like shorings in the upper tier of seats. Additional counter weights are located along the outer stadium construction to aid with balance.
