Berlin’s former governing mayor receives the highest distinction of Berlin’s largest sports association for his lasting social commitment to sports in Germany’s capital.
„Football has been a steady companion to the city of Berlin and thus for the governing mayor Klaus Wowereit during his tenure“, Bernd Schultz, President of the Berlin football association said in his laudation. „Not only the Men’s FIFA World Cup of 2006, but also the opening match for the Women’s World Cup in 2011 with the record numbers for attendance have found a place in the history books of football. During the contract extension talks to keep the DFB Cup Final at the Olympiastadion Berlin through 2020, he was equally involved. Klaus Wowereit rendered outstanding services to sports and football in particular in Berlin. Off the pitch, Klaus Wowereit has stood up in the fight against homophobia and racism. He stands for a cooperative and fair society. This social and societal involvement strongly bonds and connects him to the Berlin football association.“
